Anne Robinson steps down as Countdown presenter: ‘It’s time for an older woman to take the reins’

Anne Robinson steps down as host of Channel 4 quiz show countdown after a year it was announced.

Robinson, who took over the role in 2021, said: “I’ve had an amazing time hosting this wonderful show. And I stayed longer than I signed up. Now it’s time for an older woman to take the reins.

“I also hope I’ve encouraged TV bosses to realize that not all women in the wrong end of the 1970s are playing bingo and watching magic tricks in nursing homes.”

Robinson joked that she can now write an anagram “twice as fast” as she could this time last year.

“But I have grandchildren, a big yard and a house in New York, all of which deserve more of my attention,” she said.

Channel 4 said Robinson, who recorded 265 countdown Episodes would continue to appear on shows through the summer.

A spokesperson for the show said: “The quick-witted Anne was a brilliant host of this iconic show.”

Robinson followed in the footsteps of Richard Whiteley, Des Lynam, Des O’Connor, Jeff Stelling and Nick Hewer as presenter Countdown, which came onto the market in 1982.

Speaking of Robinson’s notoriously icy personality, Riley told presenter Lorraine Kelly: “She’s not the most cuddly person in the world. It’s just a different show now. She makes it her own.

“She gets things out of the candidates. Sometimes it’s unruly, sometimes it’s funny. She has different tastes.”
