Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson were announced as hosts of the upcoming American Song Contest season during the Super Bowl LVI halftime show on February 13, 2022.
“I’m honored to host the American Song Contest alongside my little sister, Kelly Clarkson, aka Miss Texas,” Snoop said in a statement.
Kelly added: “I was a fan and loved the concept of Eurovision and I’m thrilled to be bringing the musical phenomenon to America.
“I’m really excited to be working with Snoop and can’t wait to see each state and territory represented by artists singing their own songs.”
In 2021, Snoop and Kelly appeared together on season 20 of The Voice, another singing competition.
Kelly served as a coach while Snoop acted as a mentor.
What is the American Song Contest?
Based on Eurovision, the American Song Contest is a nationwide singing competition.
Eurovision first debuted in 1956 and features artists from mainly European countries competing against original music.
In 1971, Eurovision first aired in the continental United States.
As early as 2006, plans were circulating to develop an American version of the song contest.
It wasn’t until 2019 that Eurovision producers Christer Björkman and Ola Melzig secured the rights to release an American adaptation.
According to Bjorkman, various cities in Nevada and Florida have been considered as hosts, including Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas.
