American Airlines passenger admits jumping on cart and undressing

A Washington state man faces up to 20 years in prison after he admitted jumping over a drinks trolley and trying to undress on board a diverted American Airlines flight.

Adam Alexander Williams, 33, of Auburn, Wash., pleaded guilty Thursday to interfering with flight members and flight attendants more than five months after he arranged for a flight from Seattle to Charlotte, North Carolina to land in Billings, Montana, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana.

Williams will be sentenced at a later date. In addition to jail time, he faces a $25,000 fine and three years of supervised release.

According to court documents, Williams was traveling to North Carolina on Jan. 9 when his mid-flight behavior “erratic and escalated.”

At one point, he didn’t yell at anyone, “Where’s Jamie Sanders?” He later jumped over passengers in his row and onto a beverage cart in the aisle.

“As he got out of the car, he almost landed on a flight attendant and pushed her into a seat, throwing drinks and cups on the floor,” the notes said. “Then he started walking down the aisle of the plane.”

William’s behavior is said to have startled the flight attendant, who appeared “desperate and traumatized.”

Prosecutors said another member of the cabin crew managed to calm Williams down and escort him back to his seat.

“About 10 minutes later, Williams began performing again and yelled an obscenity,” the documents read.

Flight attendants then placed several US Marines, who happened to be on the flight, in seats around Williams as a precaution. But a short time later, “Williams got up and started screaming while undressing.”

At this point, the plane’s captain turned the plane over and landed in Billings so Williams could be removed from the plane.

The 33-year-old has been released from custody pending his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for October 20.

The Federal Aviation Administration has reported that as of June 28 there have been 1,562 reports of unruly passengers, 520 of which have prompted investigations.

Last year, the agency investigated 1,099 incidents involving unruly passengers.
