Three million people have signed the petition to remove Amber Heard from DCs Aquaman Consequence.
The online petition reached the milestone on Tuesday, May 3, and just hours before Heard is scheduled to take the stand in the defamation trial brought by her ex-husband Johnny Depp.
That Pirates of the Caribbean Star is suing Heard for $50m (£38.2m) over a 2018 comment in the Washington Post. Depp claims Heard implied he abused her throughout their relationship, which he denies.
He claims Heard’s article cost him major film deals, including the Pirates franchise, and was detrimental to his professional standing in Hollywood.
aquaman 2, in which Heard plays Aquaman’s (Jason Momoa) love interest Mera, wrapped filming earlier this year, with director James Wan confirming the film wrapped in January. Release is scheduled for March 2023.
The petition was started by fans who claim that since the couple’s divorce in 2016, Heard has “systematically crucified to ruin Depp in Hollywood.” At the time of writing, 3.2 million people had signed.
The Independent has reached out to Heard and Wan’s rep for comment.
Heard previously condemned the campaign to have her removed from the film. She denied that the outcome of the Depp defamation case affected her own franchise and confirmed that she should film the sequel.
“Paid rumors and paid social media campaigns don’t dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality,” she said in a statement.
In testimony heard Monday, May 2, Depp’s agent Jack Whigham told the court about Depp’s career before and after the comment was published, describing it as “disastrous”.
He said Depp lost his role in the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, and he failed to sign studio productions in the years that followed.
Heard is yet to testify and provide her own account of the relationship, but is expected to comment either today (Tuesday, May 3) or Wednesday.
