Amazon pays summer interns more than three times what some warehouse and delivery workers pay, according to data released Tuesday.
The average corporate intern at Amazon, which offers year-round internships, makes $8,000 a month. according to a new report from the business review site Glassdoor. That’s $96,000 per year, or $46.15 per hour, based on a 40-hour week.
By comparison, Amazon’s warehouse and delivery workers make at least $15 an hour, and the company says the median starting wage for warehouse workers is $18 an hour.
The intern pay data follows Amazon warehouse workers in New York, who are the company’s first US employees to unionize.
The Amazon Labor Union, which represents thousands of workers at the JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island, is pushing for Amazon to raise its company-wide minimum wage to $30.
While that’s double Amazon’s current minimum wage, it’s still only 65% of the company’s reported median internship wage.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to Glassdoor’s report, Amazon’s internship program is the fifth highest-paying in the United States.
