It was at Scotland’s national stadium, Hampden Park, where a young Robertson wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves while he was playing part-time for Queen’s Park.

Scottish football legend Ally McCoist has revealed how proud he is of Robertson’s growing influence over club and country.

The former Rangers boss said: “It’s one of those great stories. Sports and football spark these stories and Andy Robertson is a perfect example.

“He was released from Celtic as a kid and it would be a brutal blow for him.

“I know it’s the hardest thing about being a manager, releasing kids and telling them they’re not good enough.

“What I like about Andy, more than anything else, is that he doesn’t have anything easy.

“He didn’t go from Queen’s Park to Liverpool. It’s been a steady improvement and he’s gone up a few notches at a time.

“He has high standards and is on the right track. He’s worked in the box office in Hampden for some of the big games and I love that. He happily grafted.

“A lot of guys when they were released thought it was the end and felt sorry for themselves.

“A lot of them thought it was a missed opportunity but Andy Robertson is living proof that after the knock he got up and won the world championship.

“I managed Rangers against him and he was a brilliant and promising young man but I would defy anyone to say they saw it in Queens Park but it shows you what can be achieved.”

Robertson, 27, £10m transfer from Hull in 2017, is set to play 207th game for Liverpool at Wembley.

McCoist, 59, added: “I’ve met Andy a few times and the last time we spoke was at Leicester.

“I am so proud to see him come on the field with all these superstars and truly become a superstar.

“There is a bit of Scottish pride there. He does not forget his hometown and attends courses for children and has an academy.

“He is playing well this season and has a big game on Sunday. I consider Liverpool a gentle candidate. ”

It’s been a great month for Robertson. He helped Liverpool win against leaders Manchester City with a 6-0 win over Leeds in midweek.

But at the end of March, the Scotland captain will lead his country into a World Cup play-off semi-final against Ukraine with the winners going to face Wales or Austria for a spot in Qatar.

“We love him here,” McCoist said. He became a leader when we really needed one.

“It’s not rocket science. Scotland played better because we had better players. We’re not world beaters but we have a team that can compete.

“We have work to do. Scotland deserves to play in a major championship again.”
