His call proved a real choice for struggling Rashford, who has also been called up by former United and England captain Paul Ince.

Ince, a two-time United champion, understands the pressure of playing at Old Trafford.

While others are calling for Rashford to be expelled, Ince insists that Rashford should be kept on the side.

Paul Ince

Ince said: “When you look at Rashford, he doesn’t look happy. I’m thinking: ‘Why isn’t he happy?’

“I will not leave Rashford on Saturday. If it were me, I’d say: ‘Marcus, where do you want to play? Ten? Left hand side? You don’t get enough balls? You don’t make the right decision when you get it? How do you feel?’

“But to release him could impact him more than play him.”

United manager Ralf Rangnick was impressed with Rashford during training but he says he cannot explain why he is unable to translate that form onto the pitch on game day at the moment.

“Actually I don’t know,” Rangnick said after the game against Villa.

“He’s trying hard, he’s training, he’s been doing really well in the last few days, that’s why he’s quite a fit in the starting XI.”

But Rashford’s first-team place is now at stake for Sunday’s away trip to see Steven Gerrard’s Villa again, this time in the Premier League.

Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho missed out on the FA Cup but is expected to be available for selection later this week.
