Airbnb launches new screening tools to stop partying at short-term rentals in the US

SAN FRANCISCO– Airbnb says it will use new methods to detect and block people trying to use the short-term rental service to throw a party.

The company said Tuesday it had rolled out anti-party technology that looks at the potential renter’s history on Airbnb, how far they live from the home they want to rent, whether they rent for a weekday or weekend, and other factors.

Airbnb said the screening system it is rolling out for listings in the United States and Canada has been tested in parts of Australia since last October, where it has resulted in a 35% drop in unauthorized parties.

The San Francisco-based company said the technology is designed to prevent a customer’s reservation request from ever reaching the host of the property in question. Airbnb said people who are restricted from renting an entire home may be able to book a single room because the host is more likely to be nearby.

Airbnb has been under mounting pressure to crack down on parties since 2019, when a Halloween house party in a San Francisco suburb ended in a shooting with five dead.

The following year, Airbnb announced a global ban on parties for its listings, barring people under the age of 25 from renting an entire house near where they live unless they had positive reviews on the site. The party ban was originally intended as a temporary health measure during the pandemic, but became permanent in June.

Specifically, in Texas, Airbnb has seen a 46% year-over-year decline in party notifications since the temporary policy was implemented in 2020.
