Agents of ex-Vice President Pence’s Secret Service called relatives during the Jan. 6 riots

Members of Mike Pence’s Secret Service called their loved ones for a final goodbye on Jan. 6, 2021, when rioters demanding Pence’s head were yards away from the former vice president, it was revealed Thursday.

The agents feared for their lives as they desperately tried to evacuate Pence from the Senate chambers while angry rioters called for the vice president’s hanging.

“Members of the VP detail began fearing for their own lives at this point,” an unidentified security official told the select panel investigating the Capitol riot.

“There was a lot of shouting, a lot of very personal calls over the radio, so it was unsettling. I don’t like to talk about it,” he testified.

The agents protecting Pence braced for a possible clash with the rioters as they made the frantic calls.

“There were calls to say goodbye to family members,” he continued. “Whatever the reason on the ground, the VP detail thought this was going to get very ugly.”

He added, “We came very close that either the service had to use lethal options or worse.”

At 2:13 p.m., when Pence was being held in an office off the Senate floor, an agent was heard saying on the radio, “You have been granted access to the second floor and are about five feet from me.”

“If we lose any more time, we may lose the ability to walk. So if we want to go, we have to go now,” another agent recalled.

Security footage showed the building’s corridors filling with smoke as tension mounted.

The panel’s eighth hearing on Thursday focused on former President Donald Trump’s failure to urge rioters to leave the Capitol for more than three hours after the building was breached.

Matthew Pottinger, Trump’s former national security adviser and former deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews, told lawmakers his inaction prompted her to tender her resignation later that day.

The select panel said the hearings are scheduled for September after lawmakers spent the next month organizing a wealth of new evidence into the former president’s role in the unrest.
