Adam McKay’s ’80s Lakers Series for HBO Won the Winning Name

Upcoming HBO series from Adam McKay (Don’t look up) about the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers officially has a new title. The series was originally titled Show time, in reference to the Lakers’ “show era”, where they won five championships, but are now set to be called Time of Victory: Rise of the Lakers.

The announcement of the title change came in the form of a tweet from the series’ official Twitter account. The account tweeted a short teaser video promoting the new brand’s name, as well as when the show can be slated for release, it will be streamed in March.

The program is based on Jeff Pearlman book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s,” the show is said to dramatize both the team’s professional and personal lives. The series’ official diary entry is “one of the sport’s most revered and dominant dynasties – a team that defined its era, both on and off the field.”

Jason Clarke will play Jerry West, the Lakers’ longtime general manager, John C. Reilly will play former Lakers owner Jerry Buss, Quincy Isaiah will play Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and Solomon Hughes will play the role of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Rounding out the show’s cast is Michael Chiklis, Sean Patrick Small, Sally School, Hadley Robinson, Spencer Garrett, Delante Desouza, Olli Haaskivi, and Kirk Bavill.

McKay will act as director and executive producer on the show, with Max Borenstein as a writer. Jim Hecht, Jason Shuman, and Kevin Messick from McKay’s production company also serves as an executive producer along with Scott Stephens and EP Rodney Barnes.
