A group is putting up an anti-Semitic billboard in Florida

(CNN) – A nonprofit has placed four billboards across South Florida in an effort to raise awareness of anti-Semitism and get people thinking about its effects.

Jew, an online resource created to welcome and inspire Jewish people, posting billboards Friday across Miami-Dade and Broward counties as part of their #EndJewHate campaign.

The campaign comes at a time of growing concern national anti-Semitism.

It also happened a few weeks after a man kept four people hostage at a synagogue in Texas during an hour-long stalemate and a series of anti-Semitic vandalism activities in Chicago. The Anti-Defamation League told CNN earlier this week that anti-Semitism cases are at an all-time high.

Archie Gottesman, co-founder of JewBelong, told CNN: “We need to talk about it and we need to be uncomfortable for a minute. She believes that awareness campaigns lead to “important conversations.”

Last weekendNazi protests took place in Orlando, and last weekHundreds of leaflets with anti-Semitic language were distributed in various South Florida neighborhoods.

From 2019 to 2020, Florida also saw a 40% harassment and vandalism increased, with 91 reported in 2019 and 127 reported the following year, according to a report from ADL.

Gottesman said a lot of work remains to be done to prevent acts of hatred against Jews. “There are so many ways to prevent bad things from happening — there are education, podcasts, articles, and books — and they’re all important,” Gottesman told CNN. “To fight hate, we need a lot of tools in our tool belt, and our awareness campaign is one of the really important ones.”

A bright pink and white billboard reads: “We’ve been 75 years since gas chambers. So no, a billboard calling for hatred of the Jews is not an overreaction.” Another said, “Does your church need armed protection? Because our synagogue has. “

Billboards have previously appeared in New York City, Boston, San Francisco and Las Vegas. Toronto will be one of the future locations for the campaign.

Gottesman said the goal of the organization is to go nationwide and extend the duration of the campaigns. JewBelong also hopes to place three more billboards in Florida over the next few months.

“It’s really important not to just drop the subject because I don’t think it’s going to get any better and until it starts to get better we have to keep fighting,” Gottesman said. “Sometimes you have to be a little attractive and a little different to get people’s attention.”
