A chemical leak sparks a massive evacuation from Canary Wharf as hundreds have been urged to stay safe and firefighters rush to the scene

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from a London gym due to a “chemical leak”.

High levels of smoke and vapor in Cabot Square in Canary Wharf triggered an emergency alert around 9am today.

Around 900 were urgently escorted out of the building while firefighters tackled the problem.

London Fire Station Commander Dave Hill, who is at the scene, said: “Crews searched the building and found elevated readings.

“Firefighters have ventilated the building and are monitoring smoke development.

“As a precaution, we evacuated around 900 people from the building.”

Crews were called at 9.08am and the incident is described as “ongoing”.
