A black bear wanders too close to be comfortable in Golden Gate Estates

Neighbors are on high alert after a bear got too close to be comforted. A suspected mama bear caught on camera at Golden Gate Estates is causing concern.

A camera in the driveway of a home in Golden Gate Estates captured the animals colliding during the night. The newest one is a large black bear that worries the homeowner.

“It just sniffed through the trash there and then went down the driveway, and it was pretty big. I only worry about the kids going from dusk to dawn. Dog walkers. I just want them to know that these things are here,” said Tina McKenzie.

McKenzie shared the bear video with her neighbors, and WINK News shared her video with animal behavior expert Billy Gunnels, of Florida Gulf Coast University.

Gunnels said the bear was likely looking for food, especially at this time of year because their usual snacks haven’t bloomed yet.

He said another reason the bear might be in the vicinity, “when we move into their habitat, it completely pushes them together. Now bears have no territory, so they feed with each other in each other’s spaces, but the more bears you have in a space, the less food is available.”

While some neighbors in Golden Gate Estates have yet to encounter a bear, others have encountered other dangerous animals and will not forget it.

“A while ago my friend and I were out here just talking and hanging out at night and a mother leopard and a cub. We’re about to become junk food for them,” said Timothy Sheperd.

The Panthers have also been caught on camera moving around at night in the Golden Gate Estates. The homeowners admit they know the risks of moving to the area.

To avoid encountering these late-night visitors, experts recommend that homeowners do not create an environment where they can find food because access to food will encourage them to return.
