RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — Katie Bailey bought a $5 cash ticket at the grocery store where she works, and it paid off.
Bailey, from Lillington, bought her quick pick ticket for the April 29 drawing at the Food Lion on West Cornelius Harnett Boulevard where she works. Bailey bought the ticket on her day off.
Upon checking her ticket, Bailey found that she had won a jackpot of $834,910. After required state and federal taxes, total revenue was $592,873. The odds of Bailey winning a Cash 5 jackpot was 1 in 962,598.
Cash 5 is one of four North Carolina lottery games that offer players the option to purchase their tickets through a point of sale or online play. Tickets can be purchased either through the lottery’s website or using the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Drawings take place every evening.
Ticket sales from sweepstakes games raise more than $900 million annually for education. Of those dollars, a $10 million grant is helping Harnett County build a new school.
