9 Co-op Games Like It Takes Two You Must Play

It Takes Two is the perfect example of why co-op games just will never die, as they can create unique experiences unlike anything else. If you’re longing for another adventure as a dynamic duo, then here are nine games like It Takes Two that should tick all the boxes.

An epic single player game can bring great solo thrills and an online multiplayer game offers intense gameplay with many other players, but you’re still pretty much on your own. There’s something really cool about the palpable buzz between two people sitting next to each other playing the same game.

They feed off each other’s energy and that makes the whole experience healthier and more engaging. Considered by many to be the game of 2021, It Takes Two even made our list of the best games of 2021 – and rightly so.

Hazelight Studio’s epic tale of a failing relationship took more twists and turns than a speeding roller coaster and was more varied than a Christmas pick box. If you want more, we have nine games like It Takes Two that you must play.

Leo and Vincent are on a plane on a way out

The more serious it takes two.

A way out

An easy one to start with as it’s also made by Hazelight Studios and the similarities are pretty obvious.

Before It Takes Two launched, A Way Out pioneered the local co-op department by giving players control of two characters whose stories are fully intertwined. Rising duo Vincent and Leo work together to achieve their shared agenda and do so through clever sequences and puzzles.

It has far fewer moon baboons and elephants than It Takes Two, mostly because it’s a more serious story than its sequel, but it works very well.

Players cook in overcooked
team 17

After a while, handing dough to your partner becomes second nature.

From prison to kitchen, Overcooked games are the first games on this list that fall into the “will seriously test your friendship/relationship” category.

Team 17’s Overcooked is a sumptuous recipe of cooking, co-op, and mayhem. Each game consists of dozens of levels where you have to navigate your kitchen and cook food to serve hungry customers. The only caveat is that your working environment can range from a traditional open-end restaurant to using teleporters to traverse the upper and lower floors in a castle.

It’s amazing how far Overcooked will throw you, and you’ll need to master your teamwork to succeed!

Players encounter troll in brothers
Starbreeze Studios

Brothers often throws up some entertaining scenarios.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Although not developed by Hazelight Studios, the project is being directed by director Josef Fares – the brains behind A Way Out and It Takes Two.

If you play this after the latter, you’ll realize that this is basically a game like It Takes Two, and you can feel the seeds being planted for future innovation. The co-op element isn’t fully realized here as Brothers is technically designed for single player as you can only use one controller, but if you huddle close enough a local co-op mode is easily achievable.

If you can persevere, then there’s a really emotional and heartwarming story to play here, held together by lots of intuitive puzzles that require timing and lateral thinking.

two sack boys next to each other

If you enjoyed playing It Takes Two together, then Sackboy shares much of the same variety and novelty.

Sackboy: A great adventure

Let’s face it, everyone loves Sackboy because he’s absolutely adorable!

The LittleBigPlanet games have always been harmonious experiences that were very versatile in approach, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure is no different. It eliminates the tinkering and designing that made the original LittleBigPlanet games so endearing and focuses on delivering a fun, yet sneakily tricky, platformer.

Throw in a second pair of hands and you can have tons of fun exploring and traversing weird and wonderful levels together.

two players move furniture when moving out
team 17

In excerpt, it’s fair to say that it takes two to successfully move furniture without constantly damaging it.

If you’ve ever experienced the excruciating act of moving in real life, you already know the sheer pain and punishment that goes through it—but moving out somehow manages to be fun.

We think this is easily a game like It Takes Two because teamwork is paramount and at the forefront Game Core Basics. You need to strategize which items to move where, and you both need to be in perfect sync with each other to make sure you’re moving items as efficiently as possible.

You also have to do your best not to throw your controller on the wall. It gets frustrating, but like any difficult task, the euphoric sense of satisfaction when you’ve moved the furniture well enough is rewarding and ultimately makes the move worthwhile.

two threads on a cliff in Unravel 2

If you liked that Cody and May are represented as all sorts in Takes Two, then it’s not much different when two characters are yarn, to be fair.

decrypt 2

Another ideal two-player adventure, this time featuring two anthropomorphic creatures made out of yarn, because why not?

All the usual tandem tropes are presented here, as a litany of interactive obstacles stand between you and your goal. You’ll also never guess what’s at the fore here… Teamwork!

The platforming is on point and it’s a great example of the genre – and leaves us wanting more.

psycho and little tina
transmission software

You won’t mind jumping into any of the Borderlands games or Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.

Borderlands / Tiny Tina’s Wonderland

Borderlands 1, 2, 3, The Pre-Sequel or Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands – take your pick as each could be considered a game like It Takes Two.

Gearbox Software’s insane looter shooter series has captivated players for years with its exhaustive roster of amazing characters, bazillion weapons, and WUB WUBs and DUB DUBs.

Best of all? You can sit next to the partner of your choice while you spend all those hours of play. The latest entry in the franchise, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands goes overboard with the weirdness and is a more than acceptable entry into the franchise if your badonkadonk so desires.

kirby and second player disguised in forgotten lands

In Kirby and The Forgotten Lands, the world is your oyster… so eat it.

Kirby and the forgotten land

30 years later Kirby and the world still hasn’t had enough of him, which is quite an achievement.

2022’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land is even more impressive when you consider that decades later, our little pink pal is finding new ways to reinvent himself and appeal to new audiences. This is no more apparent than how seamlessly the game works as a cohesive co-op endeavor.

Easy on and off local multiplayer is extremely accessible and allows you to breathe in the world together.

Cuphead and Mugman battle the Cagney Carnation

Cuphead is certainly heavier than It Takes Two, but the sense of overcoming is therapeutic.

If you haven’t stumbled upon the charming and cartoonish nature of StudioMDHR’s Cuphead by now, then this could be either the best day of your life or the worst.

Despite his endlessly captivating personality and charming hand-drawn visual style, Cuphead is incredibly difficult to master if you’re not prepared. If so, then it will be downgraded to Very Difficult.

The game is an exercise in patience as you struggle to defeat bosses and stress-inducing one-shot run-and-gun missions where one mistake can mean the difference between success and failure. We recommend maxing out your friendship or relationship level before attempting Cuphead.
