Five law enforcement officers were injured in an explosion Thursday morning during a drill at a Pennsylvania jail.
The blast occurred around 9:50 a.m. at the SCI Phoenix prison in Skippack Township, about 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia, officials told WPVI-TV.
Three members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad, a Pennsylvania State Police officer and a Philadelphia FBI agent were injured in the incident, authorities said.
They were all taken to nearby hospitals. Your terms are unclear.
A prison spokesman said members of the MCSO Bomb Squad were setting up an explosive device to be used for a later class “when it prematurely detonated.”
Helicopter footage of the scene, recorded by WPVI-TV, showed a burned vehicle in an open field. Two medical helicopters and a number of police and fire officers were also seen.
Jackie Hickey, a retired bomb technician with the Los Angeles Police Department, told the outlet that reproducing a car bomb blast is standard practice in blast investigation training.
