NBC NEWS – A 4-year-old child who went missing more than two years ago was found alive by police Monday, hidden underneath a staircase in a New York home.
Paislee Shultis was found at a mansion in Saugerties, about 45 miles south of Albany, on Monday night after authorities received a tip about her whereabouts, according to the Saugerties Police Department.
Officers found the young girl after an hour of searching in a makeshift room under the stairs leading to the basement.
Detective Erik Thiele noted that there was something odd on the stairs and saw a blanket after flashing lights between the steps.
“However, detectives used a… tool to remove some of the wooden steps and that’s when detectives saw a pair of tiny feet,” police said in a statement on Thursday. Three. “After taking a few more steps, the child and her kidnapper were discovered inside. The space is small, cold and wet. ”
Paramedics examined Paislee and, after determining she was in good health, she was returned to her legal guardian, police said.
Paislee was reported missing from Cayuga Heights in July 2019 and authorities believe she was taken by her “non-custodial parents”. Cayuga Heights is about 160 miles west of Saugerties.
Kimberly Cooper, Kirk Shultis, Jr. and Kirk Shultis, Sr., were arrested and charged in Paislee’s disappearance.
Police had previously followed the links to Paislee’s last whereabouts, but said that each time residents “denied any information about her whereabouts”.
“During several visits to the Fawn Road site, authorities granted limited access to the residence in search of the child, by both Kirk Shultis Sr and Jr.… upon learning of the child and her abductor. He was hidden in the house and will not be found,” police said.
Both Shultis’ were charged with each count of interfering with custody in the first degree and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.
Cooper was charged with interfering with guardianship in the second degree and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child. She was remanded in custody under an pending order issued in Ulster County Family Court.
According to police, Shultis, Jr. and Shultis, Sr., were released in their own right. Neither of them showed up after a phone call from NBC News to the place where Paislee was found.
A number listed for Cooper was inactive on Tuesday and she could not be reached for comment.
Protective orders were issued against all three defendants.
