2nd person on Rikers Island dies in 2022

An inmate at Rikers Island died Thursday — the second death in the troubled city prison system so far this year, officials said.
George Pagan, 49, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and died around 8:30 a.m., according to city Justice Department officials, who did not say why the man was taken to the hospital.
“Any death in custody is a tragedy and we extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to that person’s friends and family,” DOC Commissioner Louis Molina said in a statement. “We are working with our partner agencies to conduct a full investigation into the causes and circumstances.”

The city’s medical examiner is investigating the cause of the man’s death.
Pagan was originally detained at the Eric M. Taylor Center on March 9, officials said, who did not mention the charges against him.
The first death in custody this year occurred on February 27 when the unknown person was found dead at Rikers.
