2 arrested and charged in connection with the death of a Fort Bend County human trafficking victim

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) – Two men have been charged in the death of a man who was reportedly trying to escape a human trafficking situation.

At approximately 12:43 p.m. on February 9, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a shooting along Howell Road and Old Richmond Road. A man later identified as 24-year-old Marlon Urias-Zelaya of El Salvador was found dead.

The investigation revealed that Urias-Zelaya was a victim of human trafficking, authorities say. He was trying to escape from the suspects when he was shot.

Clifton Brookshire, 34, has been arrested and charged with murder. Ernie Romero, 32, was arrested and charged with people smuggling.

This type of crime is not always easy to spot. It’s usually hidden until the public follows their gut and calls in what they see.

“If anyone out there sees something that’s suspicious or not up to standard, it’s important to contact your police department, your law enforcement agency, because sometimes the smallest thing can actually mean something,” said Capt. Dalia Simons of the Fort Sheriff’s Office called Bend County.

We know that other people were held captive in addition to Urias-Zelaya, although we do not know how many. Officials say in such cases, the bad guys bring people to the United States in hopes of a better life and then hold them until a family member pays for their release.
