11-year-old Houston boy with rare blood disorder San Diego man saved his life

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – On Saturday, an 11-year-old boy in Houston met the man who helped him beat a rare blood disorder, beta thalassemia.

Rushi Gandhi was dependent on regular blood transfusions for 10 years while he waited for a suitable donor. He eventually received a bone marrow transplant from Dr. Ketan Bakriwala of San Diego.

Bakriwala participates Be the match registry after seeing an ad on a social network. To his surprise, a few weeks later, he received a call about being a potential match for a child in need.

After the assessment, Bakriwala donated his bone marrow in San Diego, and the next day those cells were given to Rushi in Houston. The transplant cured Rushi’s disorder, giving him a chance to relive a normal childhood.

So on Saturday, Bakriwala went to Houston to see Rushi and his family for the first time.

“I am honored to be here,” Bakriwala said. “If it’s me, I want it. If it’s my child, I want it. I’m grateful for the opportunity. I’m glad I had the opportunity to help someone.”

Watch them meet for the first time in the video player above.
